Ingredients:
1 lb ground beef
2 large onions, thinly sliced
2 tablespoons butter
1 teaspoon sugar
½ cup beef broth
2 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce
1 teaspoon fresh thyme leaves (or ½ teaspoon dried thyme)
Salt and pepper to taste
4 slices of Gruyère or Swiss cheese
4 hamburger buns
1 clove garlic, minced (optional for garlic butter buns)
Additional butter for buns
Directions:
Heat butter in a large skillet over medium heat. Add the sliced onions and sugar, cooking for 25-30 minutes until the onions are caramelized and golden brown.
Pour in the beef broth, Worcestershire sauce, and thyme. Simmer for 5 minutes, letting the flavors meld and the liquid reduce slightly. Season with salt and pepper.
Preheat a grill or skillet to medium-high heat. Form the ground beef into 4 patties, seasoning each with salt and pepper. Cook the patties for 4-5 minutes on each side, or until they reach your desired level of doneness.
Place a slice of Gruyère or Swiss cheese on each patty in the final minute of cooking, allowing it to melt.
If making garlic butter buns, mix the minced garlic with softened butter and spread on the inside of the buns. Toast the buns in a skillet or on the grill until golden.
To assemble, place a patty on each bun, top with the caramelized onions, and finish with the top bun. Serve immediately.
