- 2 green/spring onions
- ยผ cup oil (for frying, approximately, extra virgin or grapeseed oil)
- Sweet Chilli Sauce or another sauce of your choice (for serving)
Instructions
Step 1: Prepare the Onions
- Finely chop the brown/yellow onions and green onions. Set them aside.
Step 2: Make the Batter
- In a large bowl, whisk together the following dry ingredients:
- Gluten-free all-purpose flour
- Sugar
- Polenta (or cornmeal)
- Baking powder
- Sea salt and black pepper
- Add soy milk to the dry ingredients and stir until a thick batter forms.
- Add the finely chopped onions and green onions to the batter and mix until well combined.
Step 3: Heat the Oil
- Heat the oil in a large frying pan over medium heat. To check if the oil is ready, dip the end of a wooden spoon into the oil. If it bubbles around the spoon, the oil is hot enough for frying.
Step 4: Fry the Fritters
- Use a spoon to drop tablespoons of the batter gently into the hot oil.
- Flatten the batter slightly with the back of a spatula or spoon to form small fritters.
- Cook for 2โ3 minutes on each side until golden brown and crispy. Flip the fritters carefully to ensure both sides are evenly cooked.
- Drain the cooked fritters on paper towels to remove excess oil.
Step 5: Keep Warm & Serve
- To keep the fritters warm while cooking the remaining batches, place them on a plate in a 100ยฐC (200ยฐF) oven.
- Serve the crispy onion fritters with Sweet Chilli Sauce or your preferred sauce for dipping.
Storage & Make-Ahead Tips
- Storage: These fritters are best served fresh, but you can store any leftovers in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 2 days. Reheat in a hot pan to maintain crispiness.
- Freezing: You can freeze the cooked fritters for up to 1 month. To reheat, bake them at 350ยฐF (175ยฐC) for about 10 minutes until crispy again.
