Ingredients:
- 1 sheet puff pastry (thawed if frozen)
- 4–6 slices of ham
- 4–6 slices of cheese (cheddar, Swiss, or mozzarella work well)
- 1 egg (for egg wash)
Optional: Dijon mustard or mayonnaise for extra flavor
Instructions:
1. Preheat Oven:
- Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C).
- Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
2. Prepare the Puff Pastry:
- Unfold or roll out the puff pastry sheet on a lightly floured surface to smooth out creases.
- Optional: Spread a thin layer of mustard or mayonnaise over the pastry for extra flavor.
3. Layer Ham and Cheese:
- Place slices of ham evenly over the puff pastry, leaving a small border around the edges.
- Layer cheese slices on top of the ham.
4. Roll the Pastry:
- Starting from one long edge, carefully roll the puff pastry into a tight log.
- Seal the edge by pressing gently.
5. Slice into Pinwheels:
- Using a sharp knife, slice the roll into 1/2–3/4 inch thick pinwheels.
- Place the pinwheels cut side up on the prepared baking sheet.
6. Apply Egg Wash:
- Beat the egg in a small bowl.
- Brush the tops of the pinwheels with the egg wash to get a golden, shiny finish.
7. Bake:
- Bake in the preheated oven for 15–20 minutes, or until golden brown and puffed.
- Remove from oven and let cool slightly before serving.
Tips:
- For extra crispiness, chill the sliced pinwheels in the fridge for 10 minutes before baking.
- Add a sprinkle of herbs like parsley or thyme for extra flavor.
- These pinwheels can be made ahead and baked just before serving.
