A One-Pot Southern Comfort Meal Full of Spice, Texture, and Soul
Dirty rice is a beloved Louisiana dish made with seasoned meat, aromatic vegetables, and rice—all cooked together for maximum flavor. This version uses ground beef for convenience, but you still get that deep, savory flavor that makes dirty rice so satisfying. Plus, it’s all made in one pan!
🛒 Ingredients
- 1 tablespoon olive oil
- 1 pound ground beef
- 1 small onion, finely diced
- 1 bell pepper, diced (green or red)
- 2 celery stalks, finely chopped
- 2–3 garlic cloves, minced
- 1 teaspoon paprika
- 1 teaspoon Cajun seasoning (or to taste)
- ½ teaspoon thyme
- ½ teaspoon salt, or to taste
- ¼ teaspoon black pepper
- 1 ½ cups long-grain white rice, uncooked
- 3 cups beef broth or chicken broth
- 2 tablespoons chopped parsley (for garnish)
- Optional: dash of hot sauce or a pinch of cayenne pepper for extra heat
🔥 Instructions
1️⃣ Sauté the Veggies & Meat
In a large skillet or Dutch oven, heat olive oil over medium heat. Add diced onion, bell pepper, and celery. Cook for 4–5 minutes, stirring often, until softened.
2️⃣ Brown the Ground Beef
Add ground beef and garlic to the pan. Break it apart with a spoon and cook until browned, about 5–7 minutes. Drain excess fat if needed.
3️⃣ Season It Up
Stir in paprika, Cajun seasoning, thyme, salt, and black pepper. If you like it spicier, add a pinch of cayenne or a few dashes of hot sauce.
4️⃣ Add Rice & Broth
Add the uncooked rice and stir to coat in the seasonings. Pour in the broth, bring to a boil, then reduce heat to low. Cover and simmer for 18–20 minutes, or until the rice is cooked and the liquid is absorbed.
5️⃣ Fluff & Finish
Remove from heat, fluff the rice with a fork, and let sit covered for 5 minutes. Sprinkle with chopped parsley before serving.
