Tender, buttery cake with sweet cinnamon apples baked right on top. A simple comfort dessert that never fails!

Ingredients

For the cake:

  • ½ cup (113g) unsalted butter, softened
  • 1⅔ cups (330g) granulated sugar
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1½ tsp vanilla extract
  • 1½ cups (190g) all-purpose flour
  • 1½ tsp baking powder
  • ¼ tsp salt
  • ½ cup (120ml) milk

For the topping:

  • 2 medium apples (any firm variety), peeled, cored, and thinly sliced
  • 2 tbsp granulated sugar
  • 1 tsp ground cinnamon

Instructions

  1. Preheat & Prep:
Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour a 9-inch round cake pan or springform pan.
  2. Cream Butter & Sugar:
In a large bowl, beat together the softened butter and sugar until light and fluffy.
  3. Add Eggs & Vanilla:
Beat in the eggs, one at a time. Stir in the vanilla extract.
  4. Combine Dry Ingredients:
In another bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, and salt. Gradually add the dry ingredients to the butter mixture, alternating with the milk. Stir just until combined — don’t overmix!
  5. Assemble:
Pour the batter into the prepared pan and smooth the top.
Arrange the sliced apples over the batter in a circular pattern.
  6. Cinnamon-Sugar Finish:
In a small bowl, mix the 2 tbsp sugar and 1 tsp cinnamon. Sprinkle evenly over the apples.
  7. Bake:
Bake for 40–50 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean and the top is golden and crisp.
  8. Cool & Serve:
Let cool slightly before slicing. Serve warm or at room temp. Optional: top with whipped cream or a scoop of vanilla ice cream!
