A sweet and salty treat that’s incredibly easy to make, perfect for holiday gifting or snacking, combining crunchy Saltine crackers with a rich toffee layer and chocolate.
Ingredients:
– 1 sleeve (about 40) Saltine crackers
– 1 cup unsalted butter
– 1 cup packed brown sugar
– 2 cups semi-sweet chocolate chips
– 1 cup chopped nuts (optional, such as pecans or walnuts)
– Sea salt (for sprinkling)
Directions:
Prepare the Baking Sheet: Line a baking sheet with aluminum foil or parchment paper for easy removal and cleanup. Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C).
Arrange the Crackers: Place the Saltine crackers in a single layer on the prepared baking sheet, covering the entire surface.
Make the Toffee: In a saucepan over medium heat, melt the butter and brown sugar together, stirring constantly until the mixture comes to a boil. Allow it to boil for 3 minutes without stirring.
Pour the Toffee: Carefully pour the hot toffee mixture over the arranged Saltine crackers, spreading it evenly with a spatula to cover all the crackers.
Bake the Toffee: Place the baking sheet in the preheated oven and bake for 5-7 minutes, or until the toffee is bubbly and golden.
Add the Chocolate: Remove the baking sheet from the oven and immediately sprinkle the chocolate chips over the hot toffee. Let them sit for a few minutes to melt, then spread the melted chocolate evenly over the toffee.
Add Nuts and Sea Salt: If using, sprinkle the chopped nuts over the chocolate layer. Finish by sprinkling a pinch of sea salt on top for that perfect sweet and salty balance.
Cool and Break Apart: Allow the Christmas Crack to cool completely at room temperature, or place it in the refrigerator to speed up the process. Once cooled, break it into pieces and serve or package for gifting.
