Ingredients
- 4 medium Russet potatoes, washed and sliced into ¼-inch thick rounds
- ¼ teaspoon salt
- ⅛ teaspoon black pepper
- ⅛ teaspoon cayenne pepper (optional, for a light heat)
- 2 tablespoons olive oil
- ¼ cup shredded cheddar cheese (optional)
- ¼ cup sour cream (optional, for topping)
- ¼ cup chopped chives or green onions (optional, for garnish)
Instructions
1. Preheat the Oven
- Preheat your oven to 425°F (220°C).
- Line a large baking sheet with parchment paper or lightly grease it with olive oil or cooking spray.
2. Slice the Potatoes
- Cut the potatoes into ¼-inch thick slices — uniform thickness ensures even cooking.
- (Tip: You can leave the skin on for extra texture and nutrients.)
3. Dry the Potatoes
- Use paper towels to pat the slices completely dry.
- Removing moisture helps them crisp up nicely in the oven.
4. Season the Potatoes
- In a large mixing bowl, combine potato slices with olive oil, salt, black pepper, and cayenne pepper.
- Toss well to coat every slice evenly.
5. Arrange on the Baking Sheet
- Lay the potato slices in a single layer on the baking sheet — avoid overlapping them.
- For maximum crispiness, give them a little space between each slice.
6. Bake
- Place in the preheated oven and bake for 25–30 minutes, flipping each slice halfway through (around 12–15 minutes).
- Bake until golden brown and crispy on the edges, and tender in the center.
7. Add Cheese (Optional)
- If you want a cheesy version, sprinkle shredded cheddar over the hot potato slices right after baking.
- Return to the oven for 2–3 minutes — just until the cheese melts and bubbles.
8. Serve and Garnish
- Transfer to a serving dish.
- Top with a dollop of sour cream and a sprinkle of chopped chives or green onions.
- Serve immediately while warm and crispy!
Storage & Reheating
- Store leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days.
- To reheat: place in a preheated oven at 375°F (190°C) for about 5–7 minutes until hot and crisp again.
- Avoid microwaving — it will make them soft instead of crispy.
Tips & Variations
- Extra Crispy Trick: Soak sliced potatoes in cold water for 20 minutes, drain, and dry completely before seasoning.
- Loaded Potato Slices: Add crispy bacon bits, ranch dressing, or jalapeño slices before serving.
- Healthier Version: Use avocado oil and Greek yogurt instead of olive oil and sour cream.
- Different Flavors: Try seasoning with garlic powder, paprika, or Italian herbs for variety.
