assqsq Recipe

These homemade mozzarella sticks are the ultimate crispy snack—golden, crunchy coating outside with gooey, stretchy melted cheese inside. Perfect for game day, parties, or anytime you want that restaurant-style appetizer at home.

Servings & Timing

  • Servings: 6 (about 4 sticks per serving)
  • Prep Time: 10 minutes
  • Cook Time: 5 minutes
  • Freezing Time: 40 minutes
  • Total Time: 55 minutes

Ingredients List

For the Mozzarella Sticks

  • 12 mozzarella string cheese sticks
  • 2 large eggs
  • 2 tbsp milk
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 2 cups breadcrumbs
  • 1 tsp Italian seasoning
  • 1 tsp garlic powder
  • Salt & black pepper, to taste
  • Oil for frying (vegetable/canola recommended)

For the Marinara Sauce

  • 1 cup crushed tomatoes
  • 1 tbsp olive oil
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • ½ tsp Italian seasoning
  • Salt & black pepper, to taste

Step-by-Step Instructions

Step 1: Prep the Cheese

Unwrap the mozzarella sticks.
Optional: cut each stick in half if you want smaller bite-sized pieces.

Step 2: Set Up Your Breading Station

Prepare 3 shallow bowls:

Bowl 1: Flour
Bowl 2: Whisk eggs + milk together
Bowl 3: Mix breadcrumbs + Italian seasoning + garlic powder + salt & pepper

Step 3: Bread the Mozzarella Sticks (Double Coating)

For each mozzarella stick:

  1. Roll in flour
  2. Dip in egg mixture
  3. Roll in breadcrumb mixture
  4. Roll again in flour
  5. Dip again in egg mixture
  6. Roll again in breadcrumbs (fully coated)

This double breading is the secret to extra crunch and prevents cheese leakage.

Step 4: Freeze (Very Important)

Place breaded sticks on a tray in a single layer.

Freeze for 30–40 minutes, until firm.

Step 5: Fry the Mozzarella Sticks

In a deep pan, heat oil (about 2 inches deep) to 350°F (175°C).

Fry mozzarella sticks in batches for 1–2 minutes, turning once, until golden brown.

Remove with a slotted spoon and drain on a wire rack or paper towels.

Serve immediately while hot and stretchy.

Marinara Sauce Instructions

Step 1: Blend Tomatoes

Blend or pulse crushed tomatoes until smooth (optional if you like chunkier sauce).

Step 2: Cook Garlic

Heat olive oil in a saucepan over medium heat.
Add garlic and sauté until fragrant (about 30 seconds).

Step 3: Simmer the Sauce

Add tomatoes and bring to a gentle boil.
Stir in Italian seasoning, salt, and pepper.

Lower heat and simmer for 10–15 minutes, stirring occasionally.

Serving Suggestions

Serve these mozzarella sticks with:

  • marinara sauce (classic)
  • ranch dressing
  • spicy mayo
  • garlic aioli
  • buffalo sauce

They’re best eaten fresh because the cheese pull is insane when hot.

Storage

  • Store leftovers in the fridge up to 3 days
  • Reheat in air fryer at 350°F for 4–5 minutes
  • Avoid microwave (makes them soft and rubbery)

Tips & Variations

For Best Results

  • Do not skip freezing or they will burst open while frying
  • Use firm mozzarella sticks, not soft fresh mozzarella
  • Keep oil at 350°F (too low = soggy, too high = cheese explosion)

Want them Baked Instead?

Bake at 425°F (220°C) for 10–12 minutes, flipping halfway.
They won’t be as crispy as frying but still delicious.

Want Air Fryer Mozzarella Sticks?

Air fry at 390°F (200°C) for 6–8 minutes, flipping halfway.
