Ingredients

For the Cabbage Rolls

  • 1 large green cabbage
  • 1 lb ground beef
  • ½ lb ground pork (optional)
  • 1 cup cooked rice
  • 1 small onion, finely chopped
  • 2 garlic cloves, minced
  • 1 egg
  • 1 tsp salt
  • ½ tsp black pepper
  • 1 tsp paprika

For the Sauce

  • 2 cups tomato sauce
  • 1 can diced tomatoes (14 oz)
  • 1 tbsp tomato paste
  • 1 tbsp brown sugar
  • 1 tsp Worcestershire sauce
  • ½ tsp Italian seasoning
  • Salt and pepper to taste

Topping

  • Fresh parsley for garnish

Instructions

1. Prepare the Cabbage

Bring a large pot of water to a boil. Carefully remove the cabbage core and place the cabbage into the boiling water.

As the leaves soften, remove them one at a time with tongs. Set aside about 12 large leaves.

2. Make the Filling

In a large bowl, combine:

  • Ground beef
  • Ground pork
  • Cooked rice
  • Onion
  • Garlic
  • Egg
  • Salt
  • Pepper
  • Paprika

Mix until fully combined.

3. Assemble the Rolls

Place a portion of filling onto each cabbage leaf. Fold in the sides and roll tightly like a burrito.

4. Prepare the Sauce

In a bowl, mix together:

  • Tomato sauce
  • Diced tomatoes
  • Tomato paste
  • Brown sugar
  • Worcestershire sauce
  • Italian seasoning

5. Bake

Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C).

Spread a little sauce in the bottom of a baking dish. Arrange cabbage rolls seam-side down.

Pour remaining sauce over the top and cover tightly with foil.

Bake for 1 hour. Remove foil and bake another 15 minutes until lightly browned.

6. Serve

Sprinkle with fresh parsley and serve warm with mashed potatoes or crusty bread.
