Ingredients
For the Dough:
- 500g all-purpose flour (about 4 cups)
- 7g instant yeast
- 1 tsp sugar
- 250ml lukewarm milk
- 100ml lukewarm water
- 2 tbsp vegetable oil
- 1 tsp salt
For the Toppings:
- 3–4 garlic cloves, minced
- 4 tbsp warm water
- Pinch of salt
- 250g sour cream
- 300g finely shredded cheese (Edam, Gouda, or mild Cheddar)
- Oil for deep frying
Instructions
1️⃣ Activate the Yeast
In a bowl, mix lukewarm milk, sugar, and yeast.
Leave for 5–10 minutes until frothy.
2️⃣ Prepare the Dough
In a large bowl, combine flour and salt.
Add:
- yeast mixture
- lukewarm water
- vegetable oil
Mix until a soft dough forms.
Knead for 5–7 minutes until smooth and elastic.
3️⃣ First Rise
Place the dough in a lightly oiled bowl.
Cover and let rise for 1 hour until doubled in size.
4️⃣ Shape the Dough
Punch down the dough and divide into 4–6 equal balls.
Cover and let rest for 10–15 minutes.
5️⃣ Heat the Oil
Heat deep frying oil to 180°C (350°F).
6️⃣ Stretch & Fry
Using lightly oiled hands, gently stretch each dough ball into a flat circle.
Carefully place into hot oil and fry:
- 2 minutes on one side
- 1–2 minutes on the other side
Fry until beautifully golden brown and crispy.
Transfer to paper towels.
7️⃣ Add the Signature Toppings
Mix minced garlic with warm salted water.
Brush the hot fried bread generously with the garlic mixture.
Spread sour cream over the top and finish with a fluffy pile of finely shredded cheese.
