Cook Time: 15 minutes
Chill Time: 3–4 hours
Total Time: Approx. 4 hours 30 minutes

Ingredients

For the Chocolate Filling

  • ¾ cup granulated sugar
  • ¼ cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • ¼ cup cornstarch
  • ¼ teaspoon salt
  • 3 large egg yolks
  • 2 cups whole milk
  • 2 tablespoons butter
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

For the Crust

  • 1 pre-baked pie crust (homemade or store-bought)

For Topping

  • Fresh whipped cream
  • Chocolate shavings or curls

Instructions

1. Prepare the pie crust

Bake your pie crust and let it cool completely.
This keeps the bottom crisp once the filling is added.

2. Mix the dry ingredients

In a medium saucepan (off heat), whisk together:

  • Sugar
  • Cocoa powder
  • Cornstarch
  • Salt

This prevents lumps during cooking.

3. Add the milk & egg yolks

Whisk in:

  • Milk
  • Egg yolks

Continue whisking until completely smooth.

4. Cook the chocolate custard

Place the saucepan over medium heat.
Whisk constantly as the mixture thickens — about 7–10 minutes.

When large bubbles start to pop and the mixture becomes pudding-thick, remove from heat.

5. Add butter & vanilla

Stir in:

  • Butter
  • Vanilla

Mix until silky smooth and glossy.

6. Fill the crust

Pour the hot chocolate filling into the cooled pie crust.
Smooth the top with a spatula.

7. Chill

Refrigerate for 3–4 hours, or until completely set and firm enough to slice.

8. Serve

Top with:

  • Whipped cream
  • Chocolate shavings

Slice and enjoy!
